Feature Story:
Afghanistan

On Buckets and
Bull-riding

By Adam Adams

Dirt roads through narrow valleys link communities to one another in Band-I-Amir.

Band-I-Amir is an amazing system of lakes at approximately 10,000 feet. It is a natural wonder of the world. Imagine the Grand Canyon and Crater Lake all in one place. Imagine no other person around.

Bamiyan Valley is home to many Hazaras, this group was heavily persecuted during the Taliban. There are approximately 500 thousand classrooms across the country, but only 100 thousand teachers. Many children can't go to school because there is no one to teach them.

Some aid groups are looking for ways to help diversify Afghan diets in remote regions by introducing new plants and animals that can survive in local climates. Agricultural training and assistance is a large need.

While in Kabul, a stranger invites Adam and his colleague, Jon Scherdin, into his home for a cup of tea.
