OVERVIEW: ENROLLMENT OPEN FOR 40-60 STUDENTS TO STUDY ARABIC LANGUAGE AND CULTURE- 10 WEEKS

CGE’S Amman Center, directed by Fred Tiedemann, author of The 101 Most Used Verbs in Spoken Arabic, will offer Arabic language courses in cooperation with the Applied Sciences University and Philadelphia University. Both private university campuses will host the CGE Study Abroad Arabic courses and provide a safe study atmosphere and introduction into the Arab world.

As NAFSA and other organizations are reporting, there is a need for more Arabic Speaking Americans to work in non governmental organizations, businesses, and entities associated with government such as embassies and cultural affairs offices.  In the Jan-Feb 2007 International Educator article on Higher Education in Jordan, the author reports that Jordan’s Minister of Higher Education wants to “support the sharing of global knowledge and international programs.”

Testimonial from 2007 Arabic Study Abroad Participant:

"Spending my summer studying Arabic through CGE's Jordan program was such a uniquely enriching experience. The instructors are so knowledgeable and make a somewhat difficult language very fun and easy to learn; they also provide an ample amount of free-time in the afternoons to study or explore the city. My favorite part was being able to go on the weekend excursions to various historic sites around Jordan."

PASSPORTS AND VISA:
Students need a valid USA passport with at least six months validity. Students are responsible for getting their own passports. Visitors holding U.S. or Canadian passports do not need prior approval for a visa, but are guaranteed a visa upon arrival at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman. You will need $16.50 (US) for this visa.

DEPARTURE DATE AND RETURN DATE:
Leave USA May 31st and arrive in Amman May 31st or June 1st and leave to return home August 9th or 10th.

MONEY:
There are money changers in the airport’s passport control area. Visitors carrying U.S. currency need to exchange enough money at the airport to pay for their visas and perhaps to be able to tip a baggage carrier (we recommend you roll your own bags one of the free carts provided).  Because the exchange rates are higher within the airport and in U.S. banks, it is highly recommended that students bring U.S. dollars but exchange no more than 30 dollars at the airport for their visa.

SECURITY:
CGE has a strong friendship with Jordanian officials in the government and the private sector. CGE arranges students’ educational programs with the Presidents of the Applied Sciences University and Philadelphia University, and in cooperation with the staff at CGE’s Amman Center. Also, CGE has friends in the USA and neighboring Middle East countries who would let us know if there were any issues to investigate

DRESS:
While Jordan is one the most progressive and friendly countries in all of the Middle East, it is also an Islamic country with a more conservative dress standards.

For Men: Men in Jordan typically do not wear shorts or tank tops in public unless while at a pool, running, or working out. As a man in Jordan, it is better to "dress up" than to "dress down." Male students are advised to bring comfortable clothing that has a "neat" appearance.  Khakis, dress pants, or jeans will do fine.

For Women: Respectable women are considered those who wear clothing that covers the chest and legs. Female students should avoid bringing very tight-fitted or revealing clothes.  Due to the hot weather, participating female students have recommended long skirts for comfort and coolness. Women will not have to wear head scarves or any other restrictive clothing. Women may also wear pants and conservative tops or shirts.

For All: While t-shirts are ok for some occasions, it is preferred that students wear casual but neat clothing for classes at the university. Casual shoes and sandals are appropriate for university study. Flip flops or flip flop- style sandals are not appropriate for some occasions. Dress shoes are needed for meetings, hosted dinners, and graduation. Do bring a bathing suit and towel for the Aqaba excursion and other possible water-related activities. If you plan on snorkeling in Sharm Al-Sheikh, you may bring a snorkel and fins or just rent a set from local venders.  Also, bring a pair of old sneakers or climbing shoes that you can wear while wading through the river at Wadi Al-Mujab.

INTERNET & COMMUNICATION:CGE’s Amman Center is equipped with a high speed ADSL connection.  Students may call home through VOIP service like Skype. Please see our FAQ’s for Jordan Study Abroad.
