OVERVIEW: ENROLLMENT OPEN FOR 9 WEEKS OF MANDARIN AND CULTURAL STUDY: 30 ENROLLMENTS OPEN IN BEIJING
CGE will offer Mandarin language courses for the summer of 2009 in historic Beijing University in the northern city of Beijing. The university campus will host the CGE Study Abroad Mandarin courses and provide a safe study atmosphere and introduction into the emerging worlds of China’s educational and economic growth. CGE’S Beijing Center, directed by Martha Bumpas, will coordinate the summer program with the help of CGE faculty and representatives.
As membership for China into the WTO and partnerships with international nations continue to open doors for access, Americans are being recruited to work in non-governmental organizations, businesses, and any professional arena with joint ventures or international agreement. CGE hopes to have Mandarin Study Abroad as a door opener to students understanding China and gaining the facility to excel in cross-cultural work in China.
“In the past, when people set out to improve themselves by learning another language, those that didn't already speak it usually picked English. But while English may be the only truly international language, millions are choosing what is rapidly becoming the world's other lingua franca: Mandarin. Seen as a key skill for people hitching their futures to China's economic rise, Mandarin is becoming common currency. If you want to get ahead, learn Mandarin.” Times, June 06.

China maintains a secure policy of protection and respect for foreign visitors. Students will be asked to conduct themselves appropriately on their campus during class hours. The American Embassy will be aware of this group's schedule. Embassy personnel urge all US Citizens to avoid angry voice altercations during shopping excursions or taxi rides when congestion is evident in crowds and traffic. Students will be kept aware of all safety measures as the project unfolds.
