OVERVIEW: ENROLLMENT OPEN FOR 4 WEEKS OF MANDARIN AND CULTURAL STUDY. 40 ENROLLMENTS OPEN IN HUNAN, JUNE 1-26, 2008, FOR UP TO 4 LANGUAGE CREDITS!

Hunan Normal University, in partnership with CGE, is offering a four-week, Mandarin
Study Abroad Program with an emphasis in networking with local Chinese professionals
in the areas of Finance and Banking. Additionally, students will learn about Changsha and Hunan’s important history by visiting important local sites.

As membership for China into the  WTO and partnerships with international nations continue to open doors for access, Americans are being recruited to work in non-governmental organizations, businesses, and any professional arena with joint ventures or international agreement.  CGE hopes to have Mandarin Study Abroad as a door opener to students  understanding China and gaining the facility to excel in cross-cultural work in China.

“In the past, when people set out to improve themselves by learning another language, those that didn't already speak it usually picked English. But while English may be the only truly international language, millions are choosing what is rapidly becoming the world's other lingua franca: Mandarin. Seen as a key skill for people hitching their futures to China's economic rise, Mandarin is becoming common currency. If you want to get ahead, learn Mandarin.” Times, June 06.

DEPARTURE DATE AND RETURN DATE:
Leave USA May 28, arriving in Changsha May 29. Leave to return home June 27.

MONEY:
There are money changers in the passport control area. Visitors carrying U.S. currency need to exchange enough money at the airport to be able to tip a baggage carrier.  Because the exchange rates are higher within the airport, it is highly recommended that students exchange no more than 20 U.S. Dollars at the airport. It is best to use a bank card for getting Yuan. Traveler's checks are good to take for emergency funds.

SECURITY:
CGE Coordinators and Hunan Normal University partners will be providing an orientation toward security concerning the 4 weeks in China. China maintains a secure policy of protection and respect for foreign visitors. Students will be asked to conduct themselves appropriately on their campus during class hours. The American Embassy will be aware of this group's schedule. Embassy personnel urge all US Citizens to avoid angry voice altercations during shopping excursions or taxi rides when congestion is evident in crowds and traffic. Students will be kept aware of all safety measures as the project unfolds.
