OVERVIEW: ENROLLMENT OPEN FOR 40-60 STUDENTS TO STUDY ARABIC LANGUAGE AND CULTURE- 10 WEEKS

CGE’S Amman Center, directed by Fred Tiedemann, author of The 101 Most Used Verbs in Spoken Arabic, will offer Arabic language courses in cooperation with the Applied Sciencces University and Philadelphia University. Both private university campuses will host the CGE Study Abroad Arabic courses and provide a safe study atmosphere and introduction into the Arab world.

As NAFSA and other organizations are reporting, there is a need for more Arabic Speaking Americans to work in non governmental organizations, business, and entities associated with government such as embassies and cultural affairs offices.  In the recent Jan-Feb 07International Educator article on Higher Education in Jordan, the author reports that Jordan’s minister of higher education and universities wants to “support the sharing of global knowledge and international programs.”

COSTS: Total IN COUNTRY and INDIVIDUAL = $5920
180 hours to be transcripted by the University of Applied Sciences or Philadelphia University for up to 12 credit hours. Students will be given an official university transcript with course numbers, seat hours, and grade.

Cost is divided into two parts: (1) IN COUNTRY Jordan Study Abroad and (2) INDIVIDUAL USA-Jordan Travel, and Student Meals.

2.  INDIVIDUAL USA - Jordan Travel and Students’ Meals in Jordan
($2300.00 per student) - Students will purchase tickets individually or in cooperation with their home university. Meal funds will be taken to Jordan by the students and used for food.

Airfare roundtrip: Estimated at $1600.00 (both United and Delta have flights to Chicago that will meet up with Royal Jordanian. Students can meet in Chicago on June 2nd. On the return flight, students can depart together to Chicago and then have connections to their home on Delta or United etc.)

Meals/food: Estimated at $700.00 (Each student will cover the costs of his/her own food. Jordanian food is delicious and inexpensive.  In small groups, they can share costs of nice dinners at restaurants by ordering dishes and eating family style together. There are American and European food chain restaurants nearby as well.)

PASSPORTS AND VISA:  Students need a valid USA passport with at least 6 months still valid.  Students are responsible for getting their own passports. Visitors holding U.S. or Canadian passports do not need prior approval for a visa, but are guaranteed a visa upon arrival at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman. Students should fill out the Jordan visa application form (Click here) and take it with them to obtain their visa at the airport in Jordan. You will need one picture and signed application, plus $14 (US).

DEPARTURE DATE AND RETURN DATE:  Leave USA June 2nd and arrive in Amman the 2nd or 3rd  and leave to return home August 16.

MONEY: There are money changers in the passport control area. Visitors carrying U.S. currency need to exchange enough money at the airport to pay for their visas and perhaps to be able to tip a baggage carrier.  Because the exchange rates are higher within the airport, it is highly recommended that students exchange no more than 20 U.S. Dollars at the airport.

SECURITY:  CGE has a strong friendship with Jordanian officials in government and the private sector. CGE arranges students’ educational programs with the Presidents of the Applied Sciences University and Philadelphia University in cooperation with the staff at CGE’s Amman Center. Also, CGE has friends in the USA and neighboring Middle East countries who would let us know if there were any issues to investigate.

STUDENTS: This 2008 opportunity offers places for 40 – 60 students. Fred Tiedemann will be the CGE coordinator and he has a Jordanian assistant, Zekee, who is a master Arabic teacher.  Classes will be 3 hours in the morning at the University with one of their faculty and 1 hour after lunch of conversation and immersion in the culture.  This will be 180 classroom hours with instructors. CGE participating universities and colleges will determine the number of credit hours of language study depending on their schools’ criteria.

Female students and male students will be housed on separate floors. CGE staff representatives will have a single apartment in that building during the summer term.

DRESS: While Jordan is one the most progressive and friendly countries in all of the Middle East, it is also an Islamic country with a more conservative dress standards.

For Men: Men in Jordan typically do not wear shorts or tank tops in public unless while at a pool, running, or working out. As a man in Jordan, it is better to "dress up" than to "dress down." Male students are advised to bring comfortable clothing that has a "neat" appearance.  Khakis, dress pants, or jeans will do fine.

For Women: Respectable women are considered those who wear clothing that covers the chest and legs. Female students should avoid bringing very tight-fitted or revealing dress.  Due to the hot weather, female students recommend long skirts for comfort and coolness. Women will not have to wear head scarves or any other restrictive clothing. Women may also wear pants and conservative tops or shirts.

For All: While t-shirts are ok for some occasions, it is preferred that students wear casual but neat clothing for classes at the university. Casual shoes and sandals are appropriate for university study. Flip flops or flip flop- style sandals are not appropriate for class. Dress shoes are needed for meetings, hosted dinners, and graduation. Do bring a bathing suit and towel for the Agaba excursion and other possible water-related activities.
