"Educating for Global Leadership"

The Twentieth Annual Meeting of the Consortium for Global Education met at Samford University, hosted by Dr. Andrew Westmoreland, President. Dr. Dan Grant, President Emeritus of Ouachita Baptist University and one of the founders of CGE in 1987, shared a 20-year perspective and a vision for CGE's global future.

In attendance were strategic CGE member university and college presidents, provosts, and faculty and CGE global partners with specific information about international projects and issues. University and college representatives shared the highlights of their international programs. Participants heard first-hand reports from China, Jordan, Central Asia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Morocco, and Thailand where partnerships and projects are available for faculty and students.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS


Dr. Timothy George, Dean of Beeson Divinity School of Samford University, shared an inspiring message Friday morning on "The World Christian Movement: Lessons from William Carey and Philip Jenkins." He proposed that Carey's historical experiences and findings are as relevant today as Jenkins looks at the global state of the Christian faith.



Dr. Tite Tienou, Vice President for Education at Trinity International University, was the keynote speaker for the Saturday morning session. Dr. Tienou spoke to the group on "Revitalizing Christian Higher Education in the Age of World Christianity." His message challenged attendees and provided rich post-conference dialogue concerning education, culture, and identity.

CGE NEW OVERSEAS CENTERS

Mr. Fred Tiedemann, Director of the CGE Amman Center in Jordan, interviewed students from the new Summer Arabic Study Program, Cameron Cardwell and Nathan Fuller, who shared their experiences in language study and cultural acquisition. Information was given about the 2008 program, open to all CGE member students. Click here to learn more about this program

 Ms. Martha Bumpas, Director of CGE Beijing Center in Beijing, China, also shared opportunities of partnership with China. She also reported on the CGEWorld Summer Workshops held in Nanjing and Yantai China.


BANQUET

During the Friday evening banquet, CGE was privileged to enjoy the performances of Samford University's A Cappella Choir. Dr. Carolyn Bishop, CGE President, and Dr. Brad Creed, Samford University Provost, addressed the group.


  Dr. Andrew Westmoreland, Samford University President, provided the Keynote address: "Scales Fell from my Eyes: 20 Years of Inspiration from CGE."


 
Dr. Tom Corts, Samford University President Emeritus, interviewed Dr. Dan Grant, Ouachita Baptist University President Emeritus, concerning CGE's 20-year history. They reflected on the beginning of CGE by sharing stories with the group. Pictured here are Dr. Dan and Betty Jo Grant.

EXHIBITS

Attendees also enjoyed viewing Exhibits from many universities and colleges as well as special international guests.

FRIDAY LUNCHEON

Attendees enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Friday luncheon, graciously hosted by Adams and Associates International- AJGRMS. Dr. Hal Adams has serviced many CGE faculty and students with travel insurance and information for safe and secure overseas experiences.

BUSINESS MEETING

CGE held their annual business meeting to affirm their vision and goals for the 2007-2008 year.  The CGE Executive Nominating Committee recommended the following new officers and members: Chair-Elect - Dr. Craig Turner, President, Hardin-Simmons University; Vice-Chair - Dr. David Smith, President, Brewton-Parker University; Secretary - Dr. Barbara Dalby, Chair, Management & Marketing Department, UMHB; Member - Dr. Lee Royce, President, Mississippi College; Member - Dr. Pat Taylor, President, Southwest Baptist University; Member - Dr. Gary Cook, President, Dallas Baptist University. CGE extended appreciation to the 2006-2007 Executive Committee for their service.
   
CGE will be hosted by Anderson University and Dr. Evans Whitaker for the September 26 - 27, 2008 meeting.
